Ferrocarrils of the Generalitat Valenciana (FGV) has awarded Stadler Rail Valencia a €43.3 million contract to supply six bi-mode trains for its TRAM d’ Alacant network.

FGV said the new trains were part of a wider modernisation of its narrow-gauge rail network.

The six low-floor trains will run on Line 9 between Benidorm and Dénia.

The line is currently served by 2500 series diesel trains which were built between 1966 and 1973. FGV said it has faced issues with high maintenance costs, reliability and obsolescence.

Being dual mode, the new fleet will also be able to operate on the electrified lines south west of Benidorm towards Alicante.

The new vehicles are expected to start coming into passenger service in 2019.
