MTR has completed tracklaying along the 11-kilometre Tai Wai to Hung Hom Section of the Shatin to Central Link (SCL) rail project.

The milestone marks the competion of tracklaying on the East West Corridor and keeps the line on course to open in the middle of 2019.

The Tai Wai to Hung Hom Section will extend the Ma On Shan Line to the West Rail Line, creating what will be known as the East West Corridor.

TM Lee, general manager, SCL and head of E&M construction of MTR Corporation, said: “Since the commencement of track work for the ‘Tai Wai to Hung Hom Section’ in September 2015, the SCL project team has been working tirelessly throughout the process from the transportation of rails to welding, laying concrete sleepers, and surveying.

“Each and every step was planned meticulously and implemented with top-notch precision and coordination.”

MTR compared the weight of the rails for the Tai Wai to Hung Hom Section (2,500 tonnes) to that of 14 jumbo jets.

The installation of the electrical and mechanical equipment, overhead lines and signalling systems is now underway.
