The first spade has hit the ground on Maryland’s $5.6 billion Purple Line extension project.

Led by the Purple Line Transit Partners joint venture, the project will extend the Purple Line light rail network from Bethesda, Montgomery County, to New Carrollton in Prince George’s County.

The 26km extension includes 21 new stops and is due to open in early 2022.

Purple Line Transit Partners joint venture includes Fluor, Meridiam Infrastructure
Purple Line, LLC, and Star America Purple Line, LLC.

Hans Dekker, president of Fluor’s infrastructure business line, said: “Fluor is honored to break ground today on the second transit public-private partnership project in the U.S.”

He added: “We bring robust megaproject experience and industry-leading abilities to successfully design, build, finance and manage complex projects.

“Fluor and our partners are currently operating the Denver Eagle P3 commuter rail project, the only other transit P3 in the country and we look forward to building on its success to deliver the Purple Line.”
