A piece of major engineering work on Sydney’s CBD and South East Light Rail line has reached a milestone moment.
Following the breakthrough of the Sydney Light Rail tunnel at Moore Park, construction can now begin to Surry Hills.
More than 84,000 tonnes of earth has been excavated using the cut and cover method and more than 2,000 tonnes of steel used to build the 517 tunnel since work began in April 2016.

Engineers will now work to complete the tunnel structure, construct a tunnel portal – the spot where light rail vehicles will exit and enter the tunnel – and install the tracks.
The line is expected to be operational in 2019 with services running from Circular Quay to Randwick and Kingsford.
New South Wales premier Gladys Berejiklian said: “This is an important step forward as we power ahead with building the new light rail.
“This transformative project is really taking shape now with more than 10,000 metres of track laid and the first light rail vehicle set to undergo testing later this year.”
