Indian home minister Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh state chief minister Yogi Adityanath have inaugurated the first phase of the Lucknow metro line.

An opening ceremony for the 8.5km line between Transport Nagar and Lucknow Charbagh station was held on September 5 but services will be officially opened to the public on September 6.

A fleet of 20 four-car Alstom Metropolis trains will operate on the line following a €150 million deal made in September 2015 with Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation.

The rolling stock has been designed in Bengaluru and manufactured at Sri City and Coimbatore, in support of the government’s “Make in India” campaign.

The design of the train is a tribute to the city’s cultural richness, with the front end conceived in the spirit of the gates to some of the city’s most important monuments, including: the Bara Imambara congregation hall, Asifi mosque and Rumi Darwaza gateway.

Alstom has also installed its Urbalis computer based train control signalling system for the metro line.

Bharat Salhotra, Alstom’s vice president for sales and business development in Asia Pacific, said: “It is an honour for us to contribute towards government’s ‘Make in India’ plans.

“The project is a testimony of our commitment to make India a world leader in urban mobility – both in terms of technology and flawless execution.

“We look forward to continued engagement with the state of Uttar Pradesh to meet their transport infrastructure needs in their growing cities.”
