A delegation from Kosovo’s rail industry has visited Bombardier’s maintenance depot, Great Central Railway’s new bridge and a level crossing on a recent trip to the UK.

The group were visiting to learn about how the UK rail sector manages health and safety.

Kosovo Railway Infrastructure (Infrakos) were joined by train operator Trainkos and the Kosovan rail regulatory body in a visit organised by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

The trip took place between October 2 and 6 and was the second project as part of a partnership established between IOSH and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in June 2016.

EBRD is supporting the upgrade of the southern section of what is known as Rail Corridor 10 in Kosovo, which links the Kosovo-Serbia and Kosovo-Macedonia borders.

According to IOSH, the delegation said that significant progress has been made in reforming Kosovo’s rail sector but some challenges remain, especially in the areas of level crossings, contractor management and track side maintenance, which were the focus of the visit.

Trainkos’ Sefedin Sefaj added: “We will now be able to develop strategic planning parallel with economic and industrial planning in Kosovo.

“We enjoyed the opportunity to learn how health and safety is managed in the UK. Being able to speak with people involved in this can only help to make our own rail network safer.”
