Rolling stock manufacturer CRRC has announced that the world’s first hydrogen-powered tram has been put into passenger operation in China.
The three-carriage hybrid electric tram enter service in the city of Tangshan, Hebei, on October 26.
CRRC said that only water is emitted from the tram, which has 66 seats and can travel at a maximum speed of 70km/h. It can travel up to 40km before it has to be refilled with hydrogen.
In March, the Chinese manufacturer announced it has signed a contract to produce eight hydrogen-powered trams for the city of Foshan, Guangdong – marking the country’s first such deal.
That news followed CRRC’s development of the world’s first hydrogen-powered tramcar in 2015.
