San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s (SFMTA) first new light rail vehicles (LRV) have been cleared for service on the city’s Muni metro.

The announcement means that the LRVs could begin service this week.

Siemens is manufacturing 215 trains at its Sacramento facility for SFMTA, to replace and boost the agency’s current 151-vehicle fleet. The LRV order is one of the biggest in US history.

As well as being quieter and safer than the current fleet, the trains will also be more reliable running an average of 59,000 miles without breakdowns compared to less than 5,000 miles.

The first five trains arrived in January 2017 and by 2028 the Siemens trains will have replaced the current AnsaldoBreda – now known as Hitachi Rail Italy – rolling stock.
