Egypt National Railways has awarded a contract to Thales to modernise signalling and telecommunications systems on a section of the Alexandria–Cairo–Aswan railway.

The three-year deal covers the 180km section between the towns of Asyut and Nagh Hammadi.

This project will improve safety and security and allow trains to travel at speeds of up to 160km/h rather than 120km/h – and also see traffic volumes for passenger and freight to increase.

Thales’ signalling and telecommunications solution is designed to work together with the existing Automatic Train Protection and a future European Train Control System.

The project includes full protection of signalling and telecommunications systems against cyber attacks to ensure safety and system availability.

The project is part of the Egypt transport ministry’s ambitious plans, financed by the World Bank, to transform the country’s railway infrastructure.

Thales’ head of main line signalling activities Yves Joannic said: “Egypt National Railways is modernising railway signalling and communication systems to offer more frequent, quicker and safer train travel cybersecured by Thales technologies.”
