Luxembourg is to scrap its MEMOR II+ railway signalling and speed control system in favour of the European Traffic Management System (ERTMS).

The old system will be completely abolished by January 1, 2020.

Detailing the announcement on its website, French operator SNCF said the change will impact its cross-border TER 2N NG rolling stock.

Currently the trains are interoperable, meaning they meet French (KVB) and Luxembourg’s standards (MEMOR II +). In the future they will have to be equipped with ERTMS to operate on Luxemburg’s network.

ERTMS aims to replace the different national train control and command systems in Europe to create a seamless European railway system and increase European railway’s competitiveness.
