Take a look at the Sofia metro’s new trains

A consortium between Siemens and Polish rolling stock manufacturer Newag has shown transport planners around the first of a new order of Sofia metro vehicles.

Under the agreement, the consortium is set to deliver 20 three-car vehicles to operator Metropolitan EAD in 2018.

These vehicles will operate on Line 3 of the capital city’s metro, which is currently under construction.

The contract also covers the implementation of a traffic control system to enable automatic operations and an option for the operator to order an additional 10 vehicles

The new vehicles are based on Siemens’ Inspiro platform, which is characterised by high energy efficiency, low operating costs, modern design and solutions to improve the comfort of traveling.

The scope of work for Newag includes the design and construction of the interior, the launch of vehicles at the company’s plant in Nowy Sącz and the delivery of ready-made trains to the customer and maintenance during the warranty period.

Line 3 of the Sofia metro is scheduled to open in 2019.
