Alstom has agreed to help the Iraqi government develop light rail systems in Baghdad and Basra.

In the Iraqi capital city of Baghdad, Alstom will support the development of a 20km elevated light rail line, as well as the necessary rolling stock, electromechanical systems, tracks and associated civil works.

The system would link Al-Mustansirya, AlShab, Al-Wazyria, Alsarafia AlEtafia bridge, Al-Khadumia, AlMuthana airport and Al-Alawi.

Meanwhile in Basra, Alstom will assist with the development of two elevated 30km light rail lines, 15 stations and one depot.

The lines would stretch from the north to the south as well as from the east to the west of the city.

Alstom said that these projects would “significantly contribute” to the development of the country’s national economy.

The agreements between Alstom and the Iraq government were made as part of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two parties.

This was signed during a Franco-Iraqi government meeting, in the presence of Iraq’s head of national investment committee Sami Al Araji and French secretary of state Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne.

Alstom Western & Central Asia’s managing director Bernard Peille said: “We appreciate the opportunity to develop industrial cooperation with the Republic of Iraq, in order to better address the country’s needs for urban transportation.

“Alstom is ready to bring its innovative technologies and sees the signature of this MoU as a first step towards the development of a long-term partnership with Iraq.”
