The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) of New York has unveiled a prototype of its newest class of subway cars, the R211.
MTA said the new cars are an essential part of modernising the subway system.
The cars’ doors will be eight inches wider (58 inches) than the current door spans to speed up boarding and some of the pilot cars will feature open gangways to will allow for more straphangers and to reduce crowding.

Open gangways will feature on some of the initial R211 cars as part of a pilot.
There will also be digital displays to provide real-time information about service and stations, new grab rails with double-poles and brighter lighting.
MTA is currently asking customers for feedback on the design to help better inform how the cars are ultimately produced.
Delivery of new cars for testing will begin in 2020. The new cars will operate on the “B Division” of the subway, which are the lettered routes, as well as the Staten Island Railway.
