Uzbekistan and Afghanistan to develop Mazar-i-Sharif-Herat railway line

The governments of Uzbekistan and Afghanistan have agreed to work together to build a railway line from Mazar-i-Sharif to Herat, two of the largest cities in Afghanistan.

The deal of bilateral cooperation was signed by the president of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and the president of Afghanistan, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, during negotiations in Uzbekistan between December 4-6.

Although both parties made a number of agreements, they noted the “priority importance” of cooperation in the field of transport and transit corridors because they “provide the shortest and most effective access to foreign markets.” This is particularly important for Uzbekistan, a doubly landlocked country. 

The deal only concerned developing transit traffic and trade in Afghanistan.
