Romania’s state railway operator Căile Ferate Române (CFR) has awarded the Asocierea RailWorks consortium a contract to modernise the Ilteu to Gurasada subsection of railway.
The 22.34km stretch of track, which is part of the Rhine-Danube Corridor, will be modernised to increase the maximum train speed for passenger services to 160km/h.
Consortium partners Aktor and Arcada will complete the civil and rail works while Alstom – whose share of the contract is worth €40 million – will provide the signalling and electrification works. Work will start immediately with work to be completed by December 2020.
Alstom, which has been working in Romania for more than 20 years, will supply its Atlas 200 ERTMS Level2 train control solution, the interlockings and will implement the GSM-R telecommunications system for this project.
Alstom’s general manager for Romania Gabriel Stanciu said the contract strengthens the company’s “leading position” in Romania’s signalling and electrification markets.
He added: “I am very happy to see that the modernisation of Romanian railway lines progresses and Alstom continues to be actively involved in it.
“The project comes at the right time, when another similar project, carried out for the Micasasa-Coslariu rail section, is coming to an end.”
