Metroselskabet, a partnership of the municipality of Copenhagen, the Danish Government and the city of Frederiksberg, have signed a contract with Hitachi Rail Italy for the supply of eight driverless Copenhagen metro trains.
The €50 million contract covers new trains for the M1/M2 lines, which will be delivered by 2020.
In line with the needs of the service, the trains’ internal layout will be designed to increase transport capacity.
Ansaldo STS, an Hitachi Group company, will provide the signalling and communication systems.

Hitachi Rail Italy CEOÂ Maurizio Manfellotto said: “The contract signed in Copenhagen confirms our company’s ability to offer products and services that provide a comfortable, safe and reliable journey for passengers, giving our customers the means to run a smooth revenue service.”
Signed on March 7, the new contract strengthens Hitachi Rail’s presence in the Danish capital.
Since 2002, 34 of its metro trains manufactured in Naples, Pistoia and Reggio Calabria have been in revenue service on the M1/M2 lines. An additional 39 trains manufactured for the Cityringen line will enter into service in 2019.
