The Macau SAR Government has awarded MTR a MOP 5.88 billion (€588.8 million) operations and maintenance assistance services (O&M) contract for the Macau Light Rapid Transit (LRT) Taipa Line.

The 80-month contract covers the line’s testing and commissioning, operation, and the ongoing maintenance of the trains, signalling and infrastructure.

The Taipa line is a fully automated, rubber-tyred rapid transit system. Dynamic testing began in March. The first tests were conducted between Ocen station and Pai Kok station.

The 9.3 km line is due to open in 2019.

Mr Lincoln Leong, chief executive officer of MTR Corporation, said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to participate in the operations of Macau’s first railway system and serve the travelling public in Macau.

“Building on our proven operational expertise in Hong Kong and international markets, we are confident in delivering quality services and contributing to Macau’s railway development.”

The contract will be delivered through MTR’s wholly owned subsidiary MTR Operações Ferroviárias (Macau) Sociedade Unipessoal Ld.
