Hitachi ships TransPennine Express’s first Class 802 from Japan

The first of TransPennine Express’s new Class 802 trains has left Kasada, Japan for the UK.

In two months time the Hitachi-built train, which has been dubbed the ‘Nova 1’ by the British operator, will arrive at its destination.

Once it arrives, testing will begin across the North ahead of it entering passenger service as part of a fleet of 19 five-carriage trains in summer 2019.

Each new eletro-diesel train will be able to run in either five or ten-carriage configuration at speeds of up to 140mph. They will feature fast, free wi-fi as well as a complimentary on-board entertainment system.

From 2019 this fleet, which has been financed by Angel Trains, will support the Great North Rail Project by connecting major cities in the North of England and Scotland.
