More than $1 billion has been put aside by the Australian government for Perth’s Metronet suburban rail projects.
The federal government’s 2018-19 budget includes $1.05 billion for Stage One of the scheme.
Including the $490 million already committed to the Forrestfield-Airport Link, the total amount of funding for the project now sits at $1.84 billion.
The Metronet programme combines various planned railway projects in the region.
Funding secured so far will support the construction of the Morley-Ellenbrook line, an extension of the Armadale line to Byford, the moving of Midland Station and the construction of a new station in Karnup.
Perth Metronet, the authority overseeing the project, said it had recently awarded several tenders for the initial planning and investigations for the Morley-Ellenbrook Line, Karnup station and Midland station projects.
The Federal and WA Governments are also due to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to negotiate a Perth City Deal, which is expected to unlock more funding for the mega project.
