Amtrak has released a request for qualification (RFQ) as it seeks a partner to refurbish Philadelphia 30th Street station – its third busiest station.

Releasing the RFQ begins a two-phase process that will result in a preferred master developer who will assist in: introducing new customer amenities, improving the station’s retail offering, enhancing transit and pedestrian circulation and expanding the station’s concourses to accommodate anticipated increases in ridership.

Philadelphia 30th Street station serves more than 16 million Amtrak, SEPTA and NJ Transit passengers each year.

Amtrak said that it has recently made capital investments at 30th Street station of more than $85 million, including the refurbishment of the building facade, improvements to the public restrooms, replacement of the passenger elevators and escalators and restoration of the historic bronze entrance doors.

Amtrak senior programme manager Natalie Shieh said: “The re-introduction of the RFQ is a significant milestone for Philadelphia, as it represents the next step in realising the future vision of 30th Street station.

“By partnering with the right development team, Amtrak will update this world class transportation hub for the traveling public and for the city of Philadelphia, its next great neighbourhood.”
