The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has progressed its ambitious rail masterplans with the award of a project management consultancy contract.

French engineering firm Egis will assist Etihad Rail with expanding the existing 264km network by more than 850km before 2024. This covers both development and operation.

The UAE’s network is part of the Gulf Cooperation Council rail network and plays a key role in the ongoing growth of railways in the Middle East.

Under Stage Two of the expansion, the network will have more than 600km of track added while in Stage Three the network will be further enlarged by 250km.

On completion in 2024, the network will link Saudi Arabia to the Emirates and Oman.

Egis will work in close cooperation with Etihad Rail, the engineering consultant responsible for preliminary design and construction supervision, the future design-and-build contractors, as well as third parties.
