Rolls-Royce has secured a contract from Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) to rebuild three MTU PowerPacks.

The PowerPacks are deployed to drive Class 22000 DMUs that operate on the Dublin-Cork line and will be reconstructed with new ZF EcoWorld transmissions.

Not only will the rebuilt PowerPacks boast savings of up to 19 per cent in fuel and CO2 but they will also be more efficient and quieter.

Irish Rail chief mechanical engineer Peter Smyth said: “We have been seeking a more efficient drive solution and Rolls-Royce has advised us on what would be the perfect concept.

“Their calculations showed that we would be able to make significant fuel savings if we replaced the current gear transmissions with EcoWorld units from ZF.”

MTU PowerPacks are compact drive system packages that incorporate not only the engine and transmission but everything required for rail traction, including the cooling system and exhaust after-treatment.
