National rail operator České Dráhy (CD) has ordered 50 Viaggio Comfort passenger cars from a consortium of Škoda Transportation and Siemens.

Siemens will be responsible for the engineering and production of the car bodies, delivery of the bogies, dynamic commissioning and authorisation.

Škoda meanwhile will handle the electrical and mechanical final assembly, the static commissioning and delivery of auxiliary converters and control cabinets.

The total value of the order is around €115 million. Delivery of the first cars is planned within 32 months.

The five-car units have three spaces for wheelchairs, charging stations for electric wheelchairs, a barrier-free toilet and an electric lift for entering and exiting the car.

They also have a family area that will be furnished with a cinema, space for baby buggy and a diaper-changing table, and space for eight bicycles, power outlets and USB ports.

The train will be 132m-long with 330 seats and a top speed of 200km/h.

CD CEO Pavel Krtek said: “The new concept combines the comfort and equipment of high-speed trains with the advantages offered by locomotive-hauled trains. This will enable us to further strengthen our competitiveness in mainline transport, not only within the Czech Republic, but also in Central Europe.”
