Kawasaki Rail Car is to supply 72 new subway cars and refurbish 350 others for the New York’s Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) rail network.

The US subsidiary of Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Kawasaki Rail Car will manufacture 72 additional PA5 carriages and overhaul 350 that are already in passenger service.

The new units will be built at Kawasaki’s factory in Lincoln, Nebraska. Testing will then be carried out between Lincoln and the manufacturer’s site in Yonkers, New York.

Deliveries are expected to start in 2022 and the contract has been valued at around $240 million.

The existing 350 PA5 carriages were delivered between 2009 and 2012. Kawasaki will overhaul all of these units between 2018 and 2024 in Yonkers.
