A new £5 million building has opened at Hitachi’s Newton Aycliffe plant in the UK, taking the rolling stock manufacturer’s total investment in the site to more than £100 million.

The train maker said the new addition will increase the site’s production capacity by providing more storage areas for trains and parts.

Member of Parliament Phil Wilson, who officially opened the building, said for every job created by Hitachi, there are an additional 1.5 created nearby.

“I’ll be working hard to help Hitachi win more orders, which will not only support train building jobs, but also thousands more in the regional supply chain,” he added.

“We are proud add a new chapter to the region’s rail heritage and seeing our long-term investment making a real impact to manufacturing in the North.”

Hitachi said it has spent more than £628 million using 1,166 British suppliers over the past few years.
