Phase 1 of a major electrification programme stretching to 2030 has been launched.

Global Infrastructure Group’s core capabilities are in rail infrastructure design and build and telecommunication network maintenance services, while ATEC Rail Group develops and manages open access freight railways.

A project to design innovative freight wagons, which is being financed by Germany's Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI), DB Cargo and VTG, is producing 'very promising' results.

The contract was signed with KeolisAmey, which will take over the running and development of both for 15 years from October 14.

The train maker, which is itself a subsidiary of Central Japan Railway Company, intends to sell the factory to a third party.

A supplier is expected to be awarded the contract in around May 2019 with a two year design and development process to follow.  

This milestone follows Azuma trains built in Japan being testing on the route.

The high-speed trains are being built by Alstom and are scheduled to enter service on the Boston - New York - Washington D.C. Northeast Corridor in 2021.

The deal is valued at A$50.5 million and can increase to a maximum of A$54.5 million over the course of the next two years.

The deal is expected to be closed by the autumn with both businesses to be renamed in the process.
