Xinhua, China’s government press agency has reported that testing has begun on the Shanghai section of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway.

This first section of the route covers 645 km and connects Zaozhuangxi in Shandong province to Hongqiao in Shanghai. The trial is expected to be completed by May.

Test runs have been taking place on the track linking Zaozhuangxi and Bengbu in Anhui province. It is estimated that rolling stock using this line could reach speeds of 486 km per hour.

The Beijing-Shanghai line is China’s longest high-speed rail line. It covers more than 1,300km and connects two major economic zones in the Bohai Sea Rim and the Yangtze River Delta.

It is estimated that this high speed line is going to be in operation in June. Journeys between Beijing and Shanghai will be shortened by up to 6 hours.
