Vladimir Putin has opened a new rail car building plant in Tikhvin, Russia.

The new Tikhvin Freight Car Building Plant will become a ‘remarkable benchmark for the Russian industry’, he said.

The plant was built in conjunction with the ICT Group and the state development institutes Vnesheconombank and Eurasian Development Bank.

The rolling stock plant cost 36 billion rubles to build and is one of the largest production facilities in Europe.

It is estimated the plant could produce 13,000 new-generation freight cars per year.
