16 killed in Poland train crash

Listen to this article

16 people have died and dozens injured following a head-on train crash in Poland.

An express train from Warsaw to Krakow hit another train travelling in the opposite direction near Szczekociny on Saturday night.

The trains, which collided 120 miles south of the capital, were carrying around 350 passengers between them.

Officials said more bodies could be found in the wreckage as heavy machinery began pulling it apart.

The trains were travelling on the same stretch of track, which has been blamed on ‘human error’.

It is thought that engineering works meant a line was closed and one of the trains should have been moved onto a third track to allow it to pass.

“This is our most tragic train disaster in many, many years,” said Donald Tusk, the Polish prime minister.

Many of those who are injured are thought to be in a critical condition caused by the force of the impact.
