British Transport Police (BTP) are appealing for information after rail equipment worth over £1800 was stolen from the line in North Luffenham, Rutland.
The rail scrubber, which is used to clear the track of debris and allow trains to operate without disruption, was stolen on Saturday, 26 November.
PC Darren Heithus, of BTP based at Leicester station, said:
“Between 4pm and 4.45pm, the equipment was taken from the area close to Station Road as engineers inspected another part of the line.
“It’s possible the item may be offered for sale, although as they can only be used in a railway environment, it will be difficult to sell it on because it will easily be recognised as stolen railway property.
“Equipment like this is essential to the railway and cost a significant amount of money. We are currently viewing CCTV and conducting local enquiries to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
“Those who access prohibited parts of the railway to commit offences such as these need to think of the potential consequences.”
