Bechtel takes over management of Toronto subway extension

Listen to this article

Bechtel Canada has reached an agreement with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to take over project management responsibilities for the Spadina Subway Extension.

In March, TTC’s board approved a report recommending that the authority bring in a partner to manage the remainder of the project in order to ensure it hits the December 31, 2017 opening deadline.

The $80 million agreement will see Bechtel staff take over immediately. Bechtel’s project director will report directly to TTC chief executive Andy Byford.

The 8.6-kilometre line will extend the subway from Downsview Station northwest through York University and to the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.

The project was estimated to cost $2.6 billion but in March, Toronto City Council and the Regional Municipality of York approved a combined $150 million of additional funding.
