The project to extend underground line U5 to connect with U55 in Berlin is now a step closer with the completion of the tunnelling phase of the project.
The 74-metre long tunnelling machine named “Bärlinde” has completed its second path under the heart of the German capital between Alexanderplatz and Brandenburg Gate. The 700-tonne machine has now completed 1.620 metres of tunnel and installed 1,076 lining rings.
The Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) has been working with Swiss contractor Implenia to construct the tunnels and the station boxes at Museum Island (MuseumsInsel) and Unter den Linden.
The finished line is due to open in 2020.
I wonder where they dug funding for this up from given that it wasn’t completed due to civic council mock-ups to begin with.
