Canada to introduce in-cab voice and video recording

Listen to this article

Canadian safety body the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) of Canada is to carry out a study into the introduction of locomotive voice and video recorders.

Working in tandem with Transport Canada, TSB will look at how the technology, which is most notably used in the aviation industry, could help rail accident investigators and generally improve safety performance.

Transport Canada said audio and video recordings would help TSB understand how crews behave prior to an accident.

Transport Minister Lisa Raitt said: “Locomotive voice and video recorders are a critical safety tool that provide investigators with an unparalleled understanding of how and why accidents happen.

“Transport Canada strongly supports the use of voice and video recorders on trains and is pleased to launch this joint initiative with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.”
