The second phase of Singapore’s Downtown Line is to open in December, several months earlier than originally planned.
Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced that the 16.6-kilometre metro line will open before the end of the year, despite one of the project’s main contractors falling into insolvency part way through construction.
LTA said it had “completely resolved” a delay which resulted from Alpine Bau declaring bankruptcy in the middle of delivering a contract to build three of the line’s 12 stations.
Downtown Line 1 opened at the end of 2013, adding six new stations between Chinatown and Bugis to Singapore’s mass rapid transit network.
The Downtown Line is being opened in three phases. Once complete, it will become the island’s longest automated metro at 42 kilometres.
