The first of Swiss Federal Railways’ (SBB) 119 RE 460 locomotives has been overhauled as part of a CHF 230 million modernisation programme designed to extend the fleet’s life by 20 years.
The upgrade includes retrofitting the locomotives with new energy-efficient traction converters which will save around 27 GWh a year.
The second RE 460 is expected to be completed by the first half of 2016, with three more to follow in 2017. The remainder will be completed incrementally up until 2022.
