The Metropolitan Council of Bordeaux has voted in favour of awarding Keolis a new eight-year contract to operate the city’s tram system.

Keolis, which has operated Bordeaux’s light rail network, was chosen ahead of Transdev for the €1.7 billion contract.

The new operating period starts from January 1, 2015. Keolis has committed to increasing passenger numbers by 34 per cent and extending the tram network itself by 7 per cent.

Jean-Pierre Farandou, executive chairman of the Keolis Group, said: “I am delighted that the CUB has renewed its confidence in Keolis. This is a testament to our expertise in operating public transport services and to the strength of the partnerships that we establish with public transport authorities.

“The Bordeaux light rail system is set to become the largest in France, which will strengthen Keolis’ position as the world leader in this mode of transport.”
