Network Rail awards £20m Paddington roof refurbishment contract

Listen to this article

A Colas Rail/Morgan Sindall joint venture is to carry out a £20 million project to refurbish three more of the historic roof spans at Paddington station.

The contract, which was awarded by Network Rail as part of a Multi Asset Framework Agreement (MAFA), will include steelwork strengthening and repairs to the original wrought iron structure and decorative scrolls of roof spans one to three.

While the span is being overhauled, the lighting system will be upgraded and the polycarbonate roof lights replaced.

In September 2011, Morgan Sindall completed the restoration of span number four – a project that won several industry awards.

Spans one to three were built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and are listed by English Heritage as a Grade I structure.

Neil Barnes, rail director at Morgan Sindall, said: “We are delighted to have been appointed to the next phase of refurbishment at Paddington station.

“Our team has a wealth of specialist rail experience and will carry out the work from a suspended scaffold above the live railway platforms to ensure the day to day running of the station can continue with minimal disruption.”

Work is due to start at the end of July and is due to be completed by January 2016.
