Panama Metro line 2 construction contract awarded

Listen to this article

Panama has awarded the construction contract for its second metro line.

Spanish construction giant FCC and Norberto Odebrecht have successfully bid for line 2, having completed line 1 last year.

The contract will be awarded on May 22, subject to any objections.

The €1.65 billion project will include 16 new stations, 21 kilometres of elevated track and new rolling stock. The line will link San Miguelito district to the 24 de Diciembre district.

With the completion of line 1 in April 2014, Panama became the first Central American city to build an underground metro system. The 13.7-kilometre line cost €1.5 billion and took three years to commission.
