Plans submitted for new rail maintenance centre in Derby

Listen to this article

Plans for a new maintenance centre in Derby have been submitted by Network Rail.

Martin Frobisher, route managing director for Network Rail, said:

“This maintenance depot is central to our plans to help sustain a modern, reliable railway in the East Midlands. By bringing our frontline teams into a single location we can better plan and resource the maintenance of the railway. It will also allow more focused, rapid and flexible response to incidents.

“The site of the new depot sits alongside the 70-acre Chaddesden triangle. The triangle has been earmarked for development and we have a partnership with St Mowden to find the best possible use for it.”

It consists of a two-storey building containing offices and welfare facilities, storage facilities and car and cycle parking spaces. The new building will bring together up to 400 maintenance staff from existing offices and sub-depots across the East Midlands.

Work on site is hoped to start in autumn of this year and due to be completed next summer, Network Rail said.
