Listen to this article

Work has been completed on the Woolwich station box four months ahead of schedule.

The new station box, which is 256 metres long, 26 metres wide and 18 metres deep, will become an important staging post for two 1,000-tonne TBMs, Sophia and Mary, which are tunnelling between Plumstead, underneath the River Thames, to North Woolwich.

The eastern end of the box will be handed over to Crossrail in early March.

Berkeley Homes will begin the planned construction of 585 homes, as well as retail and commercial space, on the station box site later this year.
