A 4.2-kilometre extension of the U2 metro line in Vienna has opened – four years after work first started on the project.

The new line takes the U-Bahn further north from its former terminus at Aspernstraße, adding three new stations in Hausfeldstraße, Aspern and Seestadt.

With the €360 million extension now complete, Vienna’s U2 line covers 17 kilometres, with 20 stations, making it the second longest metro line in the Austria capital.

Günter Steinbauer, director of transport authority Wiener Linien, said: “We have given the cost and schedule strictly adhered Many thanks to all colleagues who have contributed to this..”
