Milan’s new metro has been towed from Reggio Calabria on Italy’s south coast to Milan to undergo dynamic testing before it goes into service later this year.
Operator Azienda Trasporti Milanesi (ATM) ordered 30 new metro trainsets in 2012 from AnsaldoBreda. The trains, which have been manufactured at AnsaldoBreda’s factory in Reggio Calabria, will be split between lines M1 and M2.
The first six-car set will now be tested to ensure the signalling and train control systems are all working correctly before the trains start to enter service in October.
The last of 20 trains being supplied to M1 is scheduled to arrive by the end of July 2015 while M2’s last train isn’t expected to be delivered until the end of March 2016.
ATM and AnsaldoBreda have said 14 trains will be operating on M1 by May 2015 in time for Expo 2015, which opens on May 12.
The new fleet has been funded by a €220 million from the European Investment Bank (EIB).
