Aarhus settles on tram design

Listen to this article

Stadler has finalised the design for the two sets of vehicles it is supplying for Denmark’s first modern light rail system in Aarhus.

The Swiss manufacturer is supplying 26 vehicles in total – a mix of Variobahn trams for the new inner city line and Tango trams-trains to operate light rail services on the existing rail network to Grenaa and Odder.

A Stadler/Ansaldo STS joint venture won the contract to build the first phase of the 110-kilometre light rail system in Aarhus in 2014.

The turnkey contract included construction of the line and its associated systems, and the supply of its trams.

Due to open in 2017 – the year Aarhus becomes the European Capital of Culture, the network includes a new 12-kilometre section of line taking trams through the city centre.

Described by Aarhus Light Rail as “elegant” and “timeless”, the seat upholstery has been designed by Kvadrat.
