German rail freight declines at start of 2015

The volume of goods transported by the German rail network fell by 4.2 per cent to 88.1 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2015.

Data from the Federal Statistical Office showed that international rail freight declined most sharply – exports falling by 4.9 per cent and imports by 134.2 per cent – while national traffic fell by 2.1 per cent.

Tonne-kilometres decreased by 1.1 per cent on Q1 2014.

Containers and swap-bodies fell by 12.9 per cent, with 1.4 million transported in the first quarter of 2015.
