New Leonardo Express trains enter service

Listen to this article

A fleet of new Coradia Meridian trains have entered commercial service on Italy’s Fiumicino Airport rail link.

The eight trainsets, which were ordered by state operator Trenitalia in 2012, will operate Leonardo Express services between the airport and the centre of Rome.

Alstom has split the design and construction of the new trains across its Italian sites.

The electric multiple units (EMUs) have a maximum speed of 160 km/h, using a “concentrated traction system” consisting of two motor bogies.
