A railway line linking Hasan, Russia, with Rajin, North Korea, has reopened following a 9 billion rouble reconstruction.

President of Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin and North Korean Railways Minister Chung Kil Soo officially inaugurated the rejuvenated line on September 22 at the port of Rajin.

Reconstruction of the line began in 2008 – seven years after Russian President Vladimir Putin and the previous leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-il, agreed to go ahead with the project.

In total, 54 kilometres of railway has had to be rebuilt, including 18 bridges, 12 culverts and three tunnels.

Jeong Soo Gil said: “This railway section will transport through friendship, promoting joint economic and transport development of our countries and the well-being of our people, and will be a reliable international transport hub linking Asia and Europe.”
