Blackfriars station to install SilentTrack

Listen to this article

Blackfriars station is to have SilentTrack noise dampers installed during its rebuild as part of the Thameslink route upgrade.

With up to 24 trains an hour running through the station from 2018 it was felt necessary to try and mitigate the acoustic effects of such an intense service.

SilentTrack, developed by Tata steel, is already in use in parts of Germany, France, Holland and Australia and can reduce noise levels by around 6 decibels.

The rail dampers comprise of up to three resonant steel blocks, embedded elastomers and are fixed either side of the rail with spring clips.

They are compatible with concrete, steel and wooden sleepers and are seen as a more attractive option than visually intrusive noise barriers.
